Since this has apparently become a music blog I give you "There is no such thing as New Wave."  Audio from Penelope Spheeris' The Decline of Western Civilization.

Nick Lowe 06/27/2008

I'm a fan.  Here he sings "Cruel to Be Kind" from 1979.

The fire is approaching Big Sur, where apparently the beloved Henry Miller Library is under threat.  Horror within horrors.

Dirty Work 06/25/2008

I've felt for a long time that Steely Dan's song Dirty Work is probably my favorite song ever.  I find myself drawn to it particularly when I'm in a kind of funk, as I've been ever since getting home, for whatever reason.  As such I've spent the last hour listening to covers of the song on YouTube.  Some pretty hilariously wonderful options, but here are a few of the highlights.  I think the Mushroom cover is maybe the best musically but it'd be hard to argue that the one of the dancing girl (Phen) isn't the best.  Feel free to pick your own favorite!

News of a possible Arrested Development movie.

SBG and I just got back from Mexico where we had a chance to bring some Netflixed Freaks & Geeks (is it cool for me to admit that we brought DVDs on vacation?) and boy is it ever awesome.  Here's a clip from the laserdome.

Smoke City, USA 06/17/2008

Bizarre, (mostly?) ironic NYT editorial that encourages Barack to take up smoking again in a bid to win over working class voters.  Excerpt: Bumming a smoke on the rope line, soiling the sleeve of his pristine suit with cigarette ash and interrupting the flow of his soaring oratory with a smoker’s hack would go a long way toward dispelling his effete image.

Target Earth 06/16/2008

Via Matthew Yglesisas, a pretty rad little trailer for a 10 minute film produced by The Atlantic on the potential consequences of a large asteroid striking our planet.  What's that music?  Full film here.
